Maldivian Network to Empower Women (MNEW) began its journey in 2007 for the advancement of women initially, under the name of Maldivian Network on Violence Against Women (MNVAW) as an informal network. However, in 2012 with the progression of our work, this network was formerly registered in 2012 as Maldivian Network on Women's Rights (MNWR).
This Network was established originally on 10th July 2007, in response to the findings of the Charter on Violence Against Women Post-Tsunami 2006. The SAARC Countries formulated the Charter on VAW during a meeting held in Sri Lanka, which identified that violence against women had increased after the Tsunami. Consequent discussions amongst all member countries led to the formation of the National Networks to work together for the development of women at a regional level.
On 9th June 2015, the Network adopted a new identity under the name of Maldivian Network to Empower Women (MNEW). With the new identity, this Network has accelerated its efforts with new energy and new vision to create a platform for women to attain empowerment in all spheres of their life.
